Mangrove Mountain Dam
These major water supply reservoirs have large earth filled, rock faced dam walls that require constant maintenance to ensure their integrity. Vegetation grows on these walls having the potential to compromise the wall integrity, primarily through their root systems.
The traditional control method of this vegetation has been to have personnel climb down onto the wall with spray equipment. This invariably has safety issues with high risk of injury to operators. Comprehensive treatment of the vegetation is rarely achieved.
Using the Yamaha Rmax Type II G Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), we were able to fly over the entire face of the dam walls at standard operating height of 3-4m above the surface, distributing herbicide to kill the vegetation. This method of application primarily used the boom spray unit, achieving complete coverage of the walls. This had the benefit of treating small plants in crevices which may otherwise be missed in ground based spot spraying operations.
Safety and Efficiency:
The time taken to complete these operations was less than 10% of the time previously spent on ground spraying operations, and achieved a far superior and comprehensive result. Aerial spraying using the Yamaha Rmax Type II G was first used at Mangrove Mountain Dam for the 2014 operation. Upon undertaking the site inspection for the 2015 spray operation at Mangrove Dam the dam manager Craig Roper said of the results from the previous year:
“It is the best result we have ever had.”
All this was achieved without a single safety incident.
